Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that he is willing to hold elections in Ukraine as long as security for all voters can be guaranteed. This announcement comes after months of tensions between the two countries, with Russia having amassed troops along their mutual border.

Zelenskyy says he wants free and fair elections in order to restore trust between the Ukrainian people and the government, which has been severely eroded by corruption and lack of faith in the electoral process. “We need transparent and credible elections,” Zelenskyy said during a press conference today (April 1st). “Our citizens must feel safe when they go out and vote.” The president added that he would like international observers to oversee any such election so there can be no questions about its legitimacy.

The statement comes just days after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops back from near Ukraine’s border, raising hopes among some observers that a potential conflict might be averted. However, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen warned last week that Russia still poses “a significant threat” to European security.

Meanwhile, tensions continue to simmer between Kyiv and Moscow over control of Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in March 2014 following a referendum deemed illegal by much of the international community. The United States has said it will not recognize any change in status quo unless agreed upon by all parties involved through peaceful means.

Enjoy the little things in life. For one day, you may look back and realize they were the big things. Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.
