The Role of Zelenskyy says deal to end war '10 percent' away
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Wednesday that his country was ten percent close to reaching an agreement to put an end to the conflict with Russia. However, he cautioned that the most crucial matters were still unresolved and expressed concern about rewarding Moscow.
Zelenskyy made these comments in a video message to a conference organized by the International Peace Institute (IPI). He added that while there had been progress in negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, the battle was not over yet. In addition, he said that diplomacy was necessary for peace.
Zelenskyy highlighted the need for global solidarity with Ukraine as the most important factor in achieving a resolution to the conflict. According to Zelenskyy, it is essential to maintain pressure on Russia until it withdraws its military forces and recognizes Ukraine's sovereignty.
Furthermore, Zelenskyy expressed concern about the potential of Russian President Vladimir Putin utilizing energy supplies from Belarus and the Nord Stream 2 pipeline as leverage against Europe and NATO members. He emphasized that now was not the time for compromise when it came to global security.
Zelenskyy also mentioned that Ukraine had been successful in convincing many countries not to recognize Russia's claim over Ukrainian territory, which he believed would help prevent further Russian aggression in the future.
