Sen. Go pushes for full operation of Mati Airport to boost tourism, economy

Title Senator Go Advocates for Full Operation of Mati Airport Unlocking Tourism and Economic Growth
As the Philippines continues to emerge as a popular tourist destination, Senator Bong Go is urging for the full operation of the Mati Airport in Davao Oriental. The airport's development has been ongoing for some time now, but it is crucial that we prioritize its operationalization to unlock its true potential.
During a recent Senate hearing on the 2026 budget of the Department of Transportation (DOTr), Senator Go emphasized the importance of completing airport projects, including Mati Airport. Transportation infrastructure has always been the backbone of our economy, he said, highlighting the significant impact it can have on job creation and local livelihoods.
Senator Go's call to action is rooted in his understanding that a fully operational Mati Airport would not only decongest the Davao International Airport but also boost the region's tourism potential. With more tourists coming in, we can expect an increase in jobs created and livelihood opportunities opened for local communities that depend on tourism.
Senator Loren Legarda echoed Senator Go's sentiments, emphasizing the importance of utilizing existing infrastructure to avoid wasting resources and minimizing safety risks. Leaving runways idle wastes existing infrastructure and even leads to safety issues, such as animals straying into airstrips, she said.
Although the DOTr requested funding from the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) for Mati Airport, it was not included in the 2026 National Expenditure Program. However, officials assured that the DBM would continue to push for funds in coordination with the Senate and prioritize the airport's operationalization once funding becomes available.
In a broader context, Senator Go highlighted the impressive progress made by former Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade, who completed over 200 airports across the country. He also emphasized the need to support local stakeholders in developing airports in their areas, which can have a significant impact on the local economy and tourism industry.
Davao Oriental is home to some of the most breathtaking natural attractions in the Philippines, including Mount Hamiguitan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its rich biodiversity; Dahican Beach in Mati City, a prime spot famous for skimboarding and beach sports; and Pusan Point in Caraga town, celebrated as the site of the first sunrise in the Philippines.
