India says two Nipah virus cases, but situation contained

The government of Kerala state is confident that it has brought under control the spread of Nipah virus after a few people became ill with severe respiratory illness. Two people have died and three others were infected with the virus since last week in southern India.
The outbreak comes almost five years to the death of 23 people from Nipah virus-related illnesses in a nearby region. Health officials said that there is no need for panic, but they urged residents not to hoard medicines or food items. The state government has announced plans to screen blood donors and step up surveillance of wildlife animals like fruit bats.
The authorities have also set up isolation wards at hospitals near the affected areas. They say that all those who came into contact with the victims were monitored and none developed any symptoms after 10 days, indicating that the virus has been contained.
