Hong Kong's officials want to expand oversight of building maintenance after deadly fire

Hong Kong's chief executive, Carrie Lam, has proposed a series of measures that aim to strengthen the city's regulations on residential buildings in an effort to prevent any more accidents like the one at the Grenfell Tower. The move comes after a deadly June 2014 fire killed nine people and injured many more.

Lam said she was deeply saddened by the incident and vowed to take action so that similar incidents never happen again. She announced plans for the government to establish a task force on building maintenance with representatives from various professions including engineers, architects, developers and landlords. The group will be charged with recommending improvements in safety standards and other areas of concern identified after an investigation into what caused this tragedy.

The proposal also includes expanding inspections by authorities like fire services as well as increasing penalties for those who violate codes or fail to comply with orders given by officials investigating such cases. This would include fines up to HK$2 million ($257,000) per offense which could result in criminal charges depending on severity of violations committed.

Finally there will be more funding made available through grants and subsidies provided directly towards property owners seeking assistance when upgrading their buildings' infrastructure . These upgrades may involve new equipment or systems such as fire alarms , sprinklers etc..

Hong Kong's government has been swift to react following this tragedy by announcing plans that aim at strengthening regulations around residential building maintenance . The hope is that these measures will prevent further tragedies from occurring due to negligence on behalf of landlords or property managers . It remains unclear exactly how much money might be needed but it seems likely more funds will need to be allocated if the government wants these changes implemented quickly and effectively .

Enjoy the little things in life. For one day, you may look back and realize they were the big things. Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.
