Emails to Chinese dancers allegedly threatened Australian PM

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's residence faced a security scare this week due to an alleged bomb threat against the anti-Beijing Chinese dance troupe. According to the act's hosts, the threat came through an email seeking to stop the group's performance in Australia. The premier was forced to evacuate his official residence on Tuesday, but police later declared there was no threat to the public after conducting a search.
The email threat reportedly contained warnings of large quantities of nitroglycerin explosives being placed in the prime minister's residence. However, the hosts accused China's Communist Party of seeking to stop performances by Shen Yun internationally, including by sending threats.
In 1999, China banned Falun Gong, which it called an 'evil cult,' after 10,000 members peacefully demonstrated outside a government building. Despite being banned in China, the group has found a global audience with Shen Yun performances around the world generating revenues of $46 million in 2022 alone.
The incident highlights the ongoing tensions between Australia and China, particularly regarding human rights issues. It also serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by individuals or groups who oppose the Chinese government's policies.
