DOH Advises Public New Strain of Superflu Poses No Serious Threat

The Department of Health (DOH) has issued an advisory stating that the new strain of superflu, also known as variant A(H3N2), does not pose any serious health threat to the public. This announcement comes ahead of the annual Traslacion, a significant gathering of devotees commemorating the transfer of the image of the Black Nazarene from its original home in Intramuros to Quiapo Church.

What is Superflu?

The DOH clarified that superflu virus is not new; rather, it has simply mutated. The term super flu refers to its symptoms, which are more intense than those of regular influenza. Assistant Health Secretary Gloria Balboa described the symptoms as similar to those of regular flu, including fever, cough, headache, and body aches, but with a longer duration.

Monitoring Efforts

Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa revealed that the DOH has been monitoring 17 cases since July, all of which have recovered. He emphasized that influenza is generally a self-limiting illness, unless an individual has a medical condition, cancer, or is elderly. As such, the DOH still recommends the use of the flu vaccine, although some claim the superflu is resistant to it.

Local Situation

DOH spokesman Albert Domingo reported that there are no local active cases of the virus so far. He noted that 41 A(H3N2) J.2.4.1 lineage (also known as subclade K) cases have been detected nationwide from August 6 to October 24, 2025, with all cases having recovered.

Precautions

Balboa urged individuals planning to attend the Traslacion to take precautions, advising those with flu symptoms to wear a mask to prevent spreading the virus. She emphasized that individuals are more likely to spread the virus if they exhibit symptoms.

Conclusion

In light of this advisory, it is essential for individuals to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of superflu. The DOH's efforts to monitor and contain the situation demonstrate their commitment to ensuring public health and safety.
