Title The Importance of Transparency Akbayan Seeks SALNs of President Marcos Jr. and VP Duterte

As part of its commitment to promoting transparency in governance, the Akbayan Citizens' Action Party has requested the Office of the Ombudsman to provide copies of the statements of assets, liabilities, and net worth (SALNs) of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Vice President Sara Duterte, and other top government officials.

The request was signed by Akbayan President Rafaela David; Francis Joseph Dee, convenor of Tindig Pilipinas and Buhay ang People Power Network; Fr. Robert Reyes, convenor of the Clergy for Good Governance; and others. The group is seeking SALNs not only for these officials but also for former Ombudsman Samuel Martires, Commission on Audit (COA) Chairman Gamaliel Cordoba, COA Commissioners Mario Lipana and Douglas Michael Mallillin, Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman George Erwin Garcia, Comelec Commissioners Aimee Ferolino, Rey Bulay, Ernesto Ferdinand Maceda Jr., Nelson Celis, Maria Norina Tangaro-Casingal and Noli Pipo; Civil Service Commission (CSC) Chairman Marilyn Yap, and CSC Commissioners Ryan Alvin Acosta and Luis Meinrado Pañgulayan.

In its letter to Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla, the group emphasized that the requested SALNs will be shared with the public. This move is significant, as Remulla has relaxed the rules on public access to SALNs, doing away with the need for consent from the public officer whose SALN is requested.

The decision to seek the SALNs was met with a neutral response from Malacañang Press Officer Claire Castro, who stated that President Marcos Jr. will not stop Akbayan from requesting a copy of his SALN.

Why Transparency Matters

In today's digital age, transparency in governance is more crucial than ever. It ensures accountability and fosters trust between the government and its citizens. When public officials are transparent about their assets, liabilities, and net worth, it helps prevent corruption and promotes good governance.

Transparency is essential for building a just and equitable society. By making information publicly available, government officials can be held accountable for their actions and decisions. This encourages transparency, which is critical for creating a more effective and efficient government.

The Importance of SALNs

SALNs provide a comprehensive picture of an individual's financial situation, allowing the public to track any changes or discrepancies over time. By making these documents publicly available, government officials are held accountable for their actions and decisions.

In this digital era, transparency is not just about sharing information; it's also about empowering citizens to hold leaders accountable. As professionals in various fields, we understand the importance of transparency in our work. Similarly, transparency in governance allows citizens to engage more effectively with their government, promoting a culture of accountability and good governance.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Akbayan Citizens' Action Party's request for SALNs is an important step towards promoting transparency in leadership. By making these documents publicly available, government officials can be held accountable for their actions and decisions. As professionals, we recognize the importance of transparency in our work, and this move highlights the importance of transparency in governance.

Enjoy the little things in life. For one day, you may look back and realize they were the big things. Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.
