Women Leading the Way Championing Peace and Security in ASEAN
In a world seeking peace, women's voices are beacons of hope. The Asean Women, Peace and Security Media Award shines a light on journalists and storytellers who amplify these voices. These stories underscore the extraordinary contributions of women in building peace and security across the region.
Breaking Stereotypes Empowering Change
This year's winners demonstrate the diverse and impactful ways women are leading change. They work in conflict zones, climate crisis frontlines, and community development initiatives to challenge harmful traditions.
The first winner, Elsa Emiria Leba of Kompass from Indonesia, wrote The Story of a Woman Sowing the Seeds of Peace in a Conflicted Land. The story follows Maj. Caj (K) Santi Kristiani, an Indonesian military personnel officer who challenges gender norms in peacekeeping. Stationed with the United Nations Mission for Stabilization in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, her presence defies traditional roles. She embodies the growing recognition of women's essential role in conflict resolution.
Santi's work extends beyond military duties, as she engages with local communities, providing essential support, fostering trust, and building relationships. Her fluency in French facilitates communication, bridging divides and building connections essential for lasting peace.
Empowering Communities Leading Change
The second winner, this columnist, wrote Storm Sisters Filipinas Redefine Climate Peace. In the Philippines, women are emerging as storm sisters, responding to climate change and existing conflicts by leading the charge in building climate resilience and fostering peace.
In conflict-scarred Mindanao, Baihannah, an Indigenous woman displaced by fighting, revives traditional weaving practices. This creates alternative livelihoods resilient to climate-related shocks, strengthens cultural identity, and community bonds. Weaving is not just about making cloth, Baihannah explained. It's about remembering who we are, teaching our children our stories, and finding strength in our traditions.
Transforming Communities From Victim to Agent of Change
The third winner, Nguyen Khanh Duong of Viet Nam Times from Viet Nam, wrote From Victim to Agent of Change Ethnic Girl Breaks Child Marriage Stereotypes. In her story, Sung Thị So, a young woman from an ethnic minority community in Vietnam, confronts child marriage. Having narrowly escaped this fate herself, So founded a legal consultation project, supporting victims by raising awareness about and advocating against the harmful practice while providing legal advice.
Conclusion Women Leading the Way
The stories of Major Santi, Baihannah, Aisha, Mariel, and Sung Thị So highlight the transformative power of women. In building peace and security, these women demonstrate the importance of recognizing women's leadership. They are addressing the root causes of conflict and empowering communities. Their work inspires us all, reminding us that a more peaceful and just world is possible when women lead the way.
