Paws-itively Overwhelmed The Alarming Reality of Veterinarians' Work-Life Balance
As we celebrate the vital contributions of veterinarians to our communities, a new study sheds light on a concerning truth many veterinarians are pushing themselves to the limit, with limited support and a high risk of burnout. The report, conducted by global pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim, surveyed 335 veterinarians and veterinary staff across Southeast Asia, including the Philippines. The findings are a wake-up call for the veterinary profession, highlighting the urgent need for change.
The Alarming Prevalence of Burnout
The study reveals that a staggering 64% of veterinary practices in the Philippines lack formal or informal well-being initiatives, leaving practitioners with no mechanism to prevent burnout. This lack of support is a recipe for disaster, as veterinarians are not only at risk of physical exhaustion but also emotional distress. The consequences are far-reaching, impacting not only their personal lives but also their ability to provide quality care to animals.
The Complexities of the Problem
The study suggests that a combination of factors contributes to this crisis
Long working hours 64% of veterinarians work more than 40 hours per week, leaving little time for self-care or personal pursuits.
Lack of recognition 44% of respondents feel that increased public recognition of their expertise and commitment could reduce stress and improve their well-being.
Poor work-life balance 74% of respondents believe that a better work-life balance is essential to motivate new veterinarians and ensure the profession's long-term sustainability.
A Call to Action
Boehringer Ingelheim is urging government and private institutions to collaborate on establishing well-being programs and awareness campaigns about the crucial role of veterinarians. The company is also launching the Going Beyond campaign, which includes the Boehringer Ingelheim Veterinary Scholars Program, providing advanced research training and mentorship for veterinary students.
What Pet Owners Can Do
As pet owners, we can play a vital role in supporting our veterinarians
Practice preventive care By taking care of our pets' health, we can help foster stronger relationships between veterinarians and their clients.
Recognize their value Acknowledge the dedication and expertise of veterinarians, and encourage others to do the same.
A Brighter Future*
