Title Tolentino Exudes Confidence in SEAG Gold Medal Haul 'We'll Get There'

As the 33rd Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) in Bangkok enters its second half, Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Abraham Bambol Tolentino remains resolute about the country's chances of securing a significant gold medal haul. Despite a slow start with 15 golds, 23 silvers, and 52 bronzes after four days of competition, Tolentino is convinced that the Philippines will catch up and meet its modest target of at least matching the 58 golds won in Cambodia in 2023.

We're confident and trust our athletes to perform exceptionally well over the next six days, Tolentino said, his voice hoarse from cheering for Filipino athletes. With still 366 gold medals up for grabs, starting Sunday, Tolentino believes that the Philippines is on track to achieve its goal.

Currently, Indonesia sits in second place behind Thailand, which has dominated the games thus far with 96 wins out of 208 events completed. Vietnam, a strong contender in previous SEAGs, is fourth with 30-30-54, while Singapore and Malaysia trail behind.

Tolentino acknowledged that there were gold medals that slipped away, but he expressed hope that officiating in subjective sports will become more objective as the games conclude. We've had losses that shouldn't have been, Tolentino said, hinting that the hosts may be receiving favorable treatment in certain events tailored to their strengths.

As the games enter their final stretch, it's clear that Tolentino is determined to see his country succeed. With the motto Dreidel dreidel dreidel, spin and win (a playful reference to the popular Jewish spinning top), one can sense the optimism and confidence emanating from the POC president.

Enjoy the little things in life. For one day, you may look back and realize they were the big things. Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.
