Title TikTok's Teen Safety Push A Step Towards Congruous Online Protection

As the world continues to evolve digitally, ensuring teen safety online has become an increasingly pressing concern. With TikTok being one of the most popular social media platforms among teenagers, it's heartening to see the company taking concrete steps towards creating a safer experience for its young users.

The statistics are alarming according to a 2025 report by Altrue, a Philippine-based digital marketing and content agency, an estimated 43 percent of Filipino TikTok users fall within the 16 to 24 age group. This demographic is not only comprised of teenagers but also tracks closely with youth behavior online – close enough that safety settings stop sounding like a policy footnote and start feeling like a home issue.

To mark Safer Internet Day, TikTok held an event in Manila that put teen safety front and center. The company showcased more than 50 preset teen safety and privacy features, including the launch of the #ThinkTwice Troop, an advocacy program built around teen safety advocates and creators.

TikTok's message was clear keeping teens safe online is a shared responsibility that cannot be left to any one group – not just the kids, not just the parents, not just the platform. Yves Gonzalez, head of public policy for the Philippines at TikTok, framed the goal in terms of rights as much as safety – equipping teens to navigate online spaces safely and responsibly, while recognizing their rights as digital citizens.

This means Filipino teens who can discover, learn, and create with parents better equipped to have real conversations about their children's digital lives.

Default Private Accounts Preset Protections

One of the key features highlighted by TikTok is the concept of preset settings. This means that protections are activated from the outset, rather than being buried in settings menus or only discovered after something goes wrong. Default private accounts for teens, a 60-minute screen time limit, controls on comments and direct messaging, and restrictions on what gets pushed through the For You feed – these are among the features that come standard.

Family Pairing Parental Involvement

Family Pairing takes this approach further. Parents and guardians can link their accounts to a teen's account and customize the experience from there. This includes Visibility on Followers and Report Alerts – ways for caregivers to stay informed without turning the whole thing into surveillance. Balancing these needs is crucial, as parents want to know what their children are doing online while teens need room to breathe.

Content-Side Features Awareness and Education

On the content side, Manage Topics lets teens curate their feed, and Smart Keyword Filtering allows them to block specific words or phrases. TikTok has also introduced a Time and Well-being section inside the app, featuring a Screen Time Dashboard, Well-being Missions, an Affirmation Journal, and a Soothing Sound Generator – focusing on building awareness around usage habits rather than simply cutting things off.

Civil Society's Role

Around the same time, the Mental Health Coalition announced the Safe Online Standards program, an independent assessment that will evaluate platforms including TikTok, Meta, and Snap on safety rules, platform design, moderation, and mental health resources. While the results are not yet in, TikTok's agreement to be evaluated is a positive step.

The #ThinkTwice Troop launch also brought in voices that pushed beyond the company's framing. Claire Laison, director of the Child Rights Desk of the Ateneo Human Rights Center (AHRC), grounded the conversation in rights, naming specific harms by their formal designations Online Sexual Abuse or Exploitation of Children and Child Sexual Abuse or Exploitation Materials.

Conclusion A Congruous Approach to Teen Safety

In conclusion, TikTok's teen safety push is a step towards creating a congruous online protection. The company's efforts to provide preset settings, family pairing, content-side features, and civil society involvement are all crucial components of a comprehensive approach to keeping teens safe online.

As we move forward into 2026, it's essential that we prioritize teen safety online. By weaving together these various threads – from default private accounts to smart keyword filtering – we can create a safer digital environment for our youth to thrive in.

Enjoy the little things in life. For one day, you may look back and realize they were the big things. Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.
