The Heat is On Serdenia and Suzuki Forge Ahead as Junior Golfers Tackle Eagle Ridge's Challenging Greens
The 2025 ICTSI Eagle Ridge Junior PGT Championship kicked off with a thrilling start, as junior golfers from across the country bravely navigated the scorching heat and demanding conditions at the Norman course of Eagle Ridge Golf and Country Club in Gen. Trias, Cavite.
In the boys' 15-18 division, Charles Serdenia and Shinichi Suzuki emerged as joint leaders after carding identical 76s. Both golfers, bound for the Junior World Championships, demonstrated their resilience and skill in the face of adversity, finishing five strokes ahead of Enzo Cham.
Serdenia, fresh from a victory at the Junior World Qualifier in Splendido Taal, showed his mettle by surging to a 37 at the front nine. However, he struggled to maintain his momentum, recording three bogeys in the final six holes. Suzuki, on the other hand, maintained a steady pace with 38s on both nines, drawing level with Serdenia atop the leaderboard.
Despite sharing the lead, Suzuki acknowledged that he was not entirely satisfied with his round, citing the challenging conditions and firm greens as the main obstacles. The greens were quite firm and tough to hold, so it took me a while to adjust to the conditions, he said. I struggled hitting greens in regulation and missed several up-and-down chances and birdie opportunities.
Undeterred by his performance, Suzuki wasted no time heading straight to the range and practice green for a quick session, determined to regain control of the tournament. This event also serves as a crucial warm-up for his upcoming Royal Junior campaign in Japan next week.
The heat was indeed intense, with temperatures soaring and the sun beating down relentlessly. The field struggled to cope with dry fairways and fast, bouncy greens, leading to some wild scores. Cham wavered with an 81, while Alonso Espartero fumbled with an 82. Rafael Mañaol and Zach Villaroman posted identical 83s.
In the girls' 15-18 category, Rafa Anciano set the pace despite a birdie-less 83, pulling ahead of Tiffany Bernardino (87) and Levonne Talion (88).
As the tournament unfolds, it's clear that adaptability will play a crucial role in determining the winners. Will Serdenia and Suzuki be able to maintain their momentum? Can the other golfers adapt to the challenging conditions and make a comeback?
In this blog post, we'll delve deeper into the impact of Serdenia and Suzuki's performance on the tournament, as well as the challenges faced by the junior golfers. We'll also analyze the key factors that will determine the outcome of the competition.
