The Great American Revival Coming to NBA
The Great American Revival Can Cooper Flagg and Friends Lead the Charge?
The NBA landscape has undergone a significant shift in recent years, with international players dominating the top 5 spots. Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Luka Doncic, and Victor Wembanyama have all had impressive careers, earning six of the last seven MVP awards and a Rookie of the Year award.
Reclaiming American Pride
However, the tide may be turning. In recent drafts, international prospects have taken top spots, with Victor Wembanyama being the first overall pick among the top five players. This trend continued in the 2024 NBA Draft, where two Frenchmen were selected at the top. But, in a surprising turn of events, the 2025 draft saw a resurgence of American talent, led by Cooper Flagg, with six out of the top seven picks hailing from the United States.
American Talent on the Rise
The 2025 draft class is also performing better than their predecessors. VJ Edgecombe, from the Bahamas, is the only non-American player in the top seven and is currently the early favorite to win Rookie of the Year.
Next Wave of American Talent
Beyond these stars, there's a new wave of American talent waiting in the wings. The NCAA Division 1 has opened its doors, and some promising young players are making waves.
Pros to Watch
Here are three names to remember as they'll likely dominate next year's NBA Draft
Darryn Peterson A 6'5 guard with a complete skillset and mature game, he's being hailed as the best guard prospect since Vince Carter or Kobe Bryant.
AJ Dybantsa An explosive, athletic 6'9 forward with unpredictable moves that will easily translate to the next level. He's often compared to Kevin Durant.
Cameron Boozer A 6'9 forward with tremendous strength and agility, he's an excellent rebounder and passer.
Peterson's Strengths
Peterson has good range from deep, shoots well off the peak of his jump, and is an athletic finisher. He also knows how to draw a foul and get to the line. To take his game to the next level, he'll need to improve his shot selection, but that won't be a problem since he can play well off the ball.
The Case for Dybantsa
Dybantsa is an unguardable one-on-one player at the college level and potentially beyond, with a high ceiling similar to Kevin Durant's. His unpredictable moves will make him difficult to defend.
Boozer's Strengths
Cameron Boozer is a big man with tremendous strength, agility, and patience. He's an excellent rebounder and passer, with a soft touch from inside and out. As the son of former NBA star Carlos Boozer, he has a strong foundation to build on.
The Hype Train*
The hype train is rolling for the next generation of American talent. If these players live up to their potential, the NBA will see a revival of American stars.
