The meeting between US senator Richard Blumenthal and Rosa Maria Aguilar was an emotional one. Rosa Maria had been deported from the United States to El Salvador, despite having grown up in this country. She has a family here, including a husband and children.
Senator Blumenthal met with her on Capitol Hill last week to talk about her case and what can be done to help others who have been wrongfully deported. They discussed the need for more due process in immigration court and ways that Congress could address this issue.
Rosa Maria was born in El Salvador but came to America when she was just 15 years old. She's lived here ever since then, raising her family and working hard every day. But in 2018, despite having no criminal record or history of violence, she was suddenly ordered deported by an immigration judge.
She appealed this decision all the way up through federal courts but kept losing until finally giving up hope altogether when President Trump signed his executive order mandating deportation for anyone who has been convicted of three or more misdemeanors within a certain timeframe (regardless of whether those crimes were related to each other). This meant that Rosa Maria had to leave everything behind including her husband and four children ranging from 8 years old down to 2 months old. They have since moved back home where they are struggling financially and emotionally trying to make ends meet while also figuring out how best to raise their young family without mom around most of the time
