The Future of Red Onion Prices Expected to Normalize by December

As we look ahead to the future of red onion prices, it's reassuring to know that the Department of Agriculture (DA) is working towards ensuring a more stable market. According to recent data, the average price of red onions is expected to normalize at P120-P150 per kilogram (kg) by December.

Current Market Trends High Prices and Low Stocks

As of Wednesday, local red onions were selling from P230 to P330/kg in markets in the National Capital Region, with an average price of P283.05/kg and a prevailing price of P280/kg. Imported onion prices ranged from P200 to P300/kg, with an average price of P245.33/kg and a prevailing price of P240/kg.

The Reason Behind High Prices Low Stock Levels

Agriculture spokesman Arnel de Mesa explained that prices are high due to low stock levels. However, he assured consumers that there won't be any shortage – as harvest season starts in December.

Imported Onions to Address Shortages

In September, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. approved the importation of 56,540 metric tons (MT) of red onions – with 11,371.12 MT already having arrived. This is sufficient to cover demand, particularly for the holidays, de Mesa noted.

Prices Expected to Decrease

De Mesa stated that prices will decrease starting next week when the remaining imports arrive. We won't see a repeat of last year's situation, he emphasized, referring to the period in late 2022 and early 2023 when red onion prices reached as high as P700/kg.

Cold Storage Facilities A Key Factor

Another factor contributing to the rise in red onion prices is the lack of cold storage facilities, de Mesa noted. Farmers are eager to sell quickly, giving traders control over supply. The DA has been working to procure more cold storage equipment, with additional facilities expected to be ready by the first quarter of 2026.

A More Stable Market Ahead

Looking ahead to the future, it's clear that the DA is committed to ensuring a more stable market for red onions. With prices expected to normalize by December and the importation of more onions, consumers can expect better value for their money. The development of cold storage facilities will also help reduce price volatility in the long run.

Conclusion

In conclusion, while the current state of the red onion market is marked by high prices and low stocks, it's reassuring to know that the DA is working towards a more stable future. With imported onions on the way and the development of cold storage facilities, consumers can expect better value for their money in the coming months.
