Strengthening Ties Amidst Rising Tension PH, Vietnam Navies Forge Deeper Partnership in West Philippine Sea
As tensions escalate in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), the Philippines and Vietnam navies are deepening their defense partnership to ensure peace and stability in the region. A recent high-level meeting between the two nations' naval leaders marked a significant milestone in their growing collaboration, underscoring the importance of cooperation in addressing shared challenges.
A Bond Strengthened Amidst Rising Tension
The September 23 meeting at the Navy headquarters in Manila saw the Philippine and Vietnamese navies solidify their defense ties amidst increasing tensions in the WPS. This partnership is crucial for addressing common threats and challenges in the region, as well as fostering a deeper understanding between two maritime neighbors.
We are indeed fortunate to have such strong relations with our Vietnamese counterparts, said Vice Admiral Jose Ma Ambrosio Q. Ezpeleta PN, Philippine Navy Flag Officer In Command. Our shared experiences and interests demonstrate the value of cooperation in promoting peace and stability.
A Record of Humanitarian Support
The two navies have a proven track record of providing humanitarian support to one another. Since 2011, the Philippine Navy has rescued 23 Vietnamese fishermen, while the Vietnam People's Navy (VPN) has saved 60 Filipino fishermen during the same period. This collaborative effort highlights the effectiveness of their partnership in addressing shared challenges.
This is a testament to our strong relationship and ability to work together effectively, said Vice Admiral Nghiem, Commander of the VPN.
A Growing Partnership
The meeting also saw the reaffirmation of the growing partnership between the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the VPN. The two militaries have been engaging in various exchanges and cooperation programs, including personnel exchanges and training exercises, which have fostered a deeper understanding and trust between their respective navies.
We appreciate the growing partnership between the AFP and VPN, said Vice Admiral Ezpeleta. We also acknowledge the help and support the Vietnamese have given us, especially in assisting Filipino fishermen when they encounter distress in fishing grounds.
A Brighter Future Ahead
The strengthened defense partnership between the Philippines and Vietnam navies is a significant step towards ensuring peace and stability in the region. As the WPS remains a contentious issue, the two nations' militaries will need to continue working together to address shared challenges.
In an increasingly complex security landscape, it is more important than ever for like-minded countries to work together towards common goals. The Philippines and Vietnam navies have set an excellent example of cooperation and coordination, demonstrating that even in the face of rising tension, diplomacy and collaboration can prevail.
