Indonesia Earthquake Why One Dies, Triggers Panic
On September 28th, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. This massive earthquake caused panic in the small town and fear across the world. The earthquake lasted approximately one minute and affected at least 1.3 million people in some way. Thousands were injured and an estimated 2,200 died as a result of the quake.
One reason that death tolls are so high after earthquakes is because buildings collapse on top of their inhabitants, often crushing them to death. Buildings need regular maintenance to ensure they can withstand these types of events. Unfortunately, many areas in developing countries cannot afford proper building maintenance or construction and suffer as a result.
Another factor that increases the number of fatalities from earthquakes is panic. When people are scared by an earthquake, they often flee their homes into the streets. The problem with this is that when a home collapses, the family members inside will be crushed to death, but those who fled may also be injured or killed by falling debris.
While one can never be fully prepared for such a devastating event, there are ways that we as humans can reduce the amount of damage and destruction caused by earthquakes. The best way is to ensure our homes and buildings are structurally sound and will not collapse when hit with an earthquake. We should also take steps to prepare ourselves and our families in case one happens so that panic does not take over and further tragedy occurs.
