Madagascar ‘Overwhelming’ destruction, surging needs after back-to-back cyclones – WFP

Madagascar is reeling from the overwhelming destruction and surging humanitarian needs brought on by back-to-back cyclones. The country's main port was left in ruins by Cyclone Gezani, according to the UN World Food Programme (WFP).
The UN food agency is calling for urgent donor support as it faces a $18 million gap over the next six months to help people recover and rebuild after these natural disasters.
Tania Goossens, WFP Country Director in Madagascar, emphasized that although funding shortfalls remain alarming, they're also in the peak of the lean season there. The country already faced an extremely critical food security situation before the cyclones, with 1.57 million people across the country being food insecure.
In addition to urgent needs for food, humanitarians are concerned about water, sanitation, and hygiene conditions as well as protection concerns for vulnerable groups such as women, children, and persons with disabilities.
