Lessons Learned from Japan
In my last article, I discussed a number of important issues facing Japan today, as well as some of the steps they have been taking to tackle them. I want to take this opportunity to expand on that discussion and delve into two areas in particular where I think Japan can learn much from other nations.
1. The importance of strong partnerships between government agencies and businesses. In many countries around the world, governments are increasingly working with private industry to achieve their goals - be they economic or social in nature. This collaboration enables a more nuanced understanding of challenges and opportunities by bringing together people who have been trained to think differently about problems but can also bring very different skills to bear on finding solutions.
2. The importance of investing in your own country's future through education and training programs for young people today so that they will be well equipped to deal with whatever challenges come their way tomorrow. It is clear from looking at successful countries like Norway that this investment pays dividends down the line when it comes time for those individuals to contribute back to society as adults.
NATO pledge deeper security ties
The leaders of Germany, France and Britain have announced a new alliance aimed at deepening military and intelligence cooperation between their nations. The move comes just days after President Trump met with his counterparts from NATO member states in Brussels where he pressed them for more spending on defense. We want to be able to protect our interests wherever they may be threatened, said German Chancellor Angela Merkel, adding that she hoped other European countries would join the new initiative.
The decision to form what is being called the 'Wehrwolf' alliance was made following a meeting between Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Theresa May at Number 10 Downing Street in London last week. A joint statement said the three countries are determined to enhance their mutual defense capability through greater military cooperation. It went on to say that this would include joint exercises, shared infrastructure such as bases abroad and the development of new technologies together.
This is an exciting time for NATO, as we continue to modernize our forces and work with partners around the world. I am confident that the steps taken today will help ensure a brighter future for all our citizens.
