South Korean firefighters were tragically unable to save their fallen colleague after he perished when his firefighting helicopter crashed on the country's southern coast.

The pilot, identified by media reports as Lee Kyung-keun, was responding to a blaze at the time of the accident. The helicopter slammed into terrain in the town of Daesan, located just outside Seoul. It is not clear what caused the crash.

He had no vital signs when we found him after the helicopter crashed, said Yim Seong-ki, chief of South Korea's National Fire Agency (NFA), as quoted by Reuters news agency. He was confirmed dead after being taken to a hospital.

According to Yonhap News, Lee Kyung-keun had been with the country's NFA for about 30 years, and had participated in more than 1,000 fire suppression missions during his career.

He always showed a very strong will despite various difficulties, said NFA chief Yang Ju-jin, who described the accident as a national disaster.
