According to foreign minister Antonio Tajani, Italy has thwarted a series of Russian cyberattacks targeting Washington, embassy sites, and Winter Olympics venues in Cortina D'Ampezzo and Milan. The attack affected over 120 sites and was effectively neutralized. A hacker group Noname057 claimed responsibility for the attack in response to Italy's support for Ukraine. Cybersecurity analysts were cited online.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) commented, We don't comment on security. It is best practice not to.

ICE deployment ICE agents will be present at the Olympics due to heightened security measures. However, Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi clarified that ICE agents would only operate within US diplomatic missions and have no executive function.

Political leaders from around the world are expected to attend the opening ceremony in Milan on Friday, which has sparked controversy. The issue of political neutrality during the Games is a fraught topic, especially with the presence of ICE agents. However, Minister Piantedosi stressed that the controversy was unfounded, and ICE's involvement would not lead to operational police activities on Italian territory.

The HSI investigates global threats, including cybercrimes and national security threats. The US ambassador to Italy, Tilman J. Fertitta, stated that the HSI will be strictly advisory and intelligence-based with no patrolling or enforcement involvement.
