Iran executes two members of banned opposition group — judiciary

Iran executes two members of banned opposition group
Iran has executed two men convicted of being members of a banned Iranian op[2D[K
opposition group, according to reports by the state-controlled press. The e[1D[K
executions took place in public at the main square of Mashhad, the capital [K
city of Razavi Khorasan province.
The first man to be executed was identified as Mohammad Reza Ali Zamani, wh[2D[K
who was 31 years old and hanged before a crowd of over one thousand people.[7D[K
people. He was convicted of being an activist for the People's Mujahedin Or[2D[K
Organization of Iran (MEK), which is outlawed in Iran but has been describe[8D[K
described by officials from the United States government as having the lar[3D[K
largest single opposition group to Iran.
The second man executed was identified as Amir Heshmatollah Taravati, who w[1D[K
was 27 years old and also hanged before a crowd. He had been convicted of b[1D[K
being an activist for MEK in October of last year, according to reports.
Iran's judiciary branch reported that Zamani was executed after final lega[4D[K
legal steps were completed while the execution of Taravati took place in [K
accordance with the rulings of the judicial system. The hangings occurred [K
at 830 a.m. local time on January 29th in front of the governorate buildin[7D[K
building located near the center of Mashhad.
A spokesperson for Iran's foreign ministry, Ramin Mehmann-Laridani, said th[2D[K
that the executions were carried out within the framework of [Iran's] dome[4D[K
domestic laws and regulations. The statement went on to say that they shou[4D[K
should not be seen as a violation of human rights.
MEK is listed as an international terrorist group by the United States Depa[4D[K
Department of State. However, the organization has been described as having[6D[K
having the largest single opposition group in Iran by officials from the Un[2D[K
United States government.
