Genocide Looms Large UN Human Rights Council Warns of Ongoing Risk in Sudan

The United Nations Human Rights Council has sounded the alarm on the ongoing risk of further genocidal violence in Sudan, where nearly three years of war have been marked by devastating human rights violations.

In a dire report presented to the Council, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Tüerk outlined the chronicle of cruelty that has unfolded in Sudan. The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has resulted in a staggering increase in civilian deaths, with at least 11,300 killed last year alone – nearly triple the number in 2024.

The High Commissioner's report highlighted the horrific impact of the war on civilians, including women and girls who have been subjected to sexual violence, rape, gang rape, and slavery. The bodies of Sudanese women and girls have been weaponised to terrorize communities, with over 500 victims identified in 2025.

The situation is particularly dire in El Fasher, where the RSF's capture of the Zamzam camp in North Darfur unleashed carnage that claimed thousands of lives, amounting to war crimes and possible crimes against humanity. The UN rights chief warned that this pattern of brutality may be repeated in other parts of Sudan, including Kordofan region.

The Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for the Sudan established by the Council in October 2023 has also sounded the alarm on the ongoing risk of genocidal violence. In its latest report, Chair Mohamed Chande Othman warned that the situation around El Fasher exhibits clear hallmarks of genocide by the RSF against the Zaghawa and Fur communities.

The international community must take immediate action to protect the people of Sudan and hold those responsible accountable for their actions. The UN Human Rights Council must prioritize addressing the ongoing risk of genocidal violence in Sudan, and the international community must work together to ensure that those perpetrating these atrocities are held accountable.

As the High Commissioner warned, the nettle of genocidal violence can only be addressed by taking bold action and standing together in solidarity with those affected.

Enjoy the little things in life. For one day, you may look back and realize they were the big things. Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.
