As the 33rd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) get underway in Bangkok, Filipino athletes Lauren Hoffman and John Cabang Tolentino are set to take center stage in the athletics competition. Fresh from their Olympic experiences, both Olympians are determined to make a mark in the biennial meet.

Seeking Redemption

For Hoffman, the 26-year-old North Carolina Fil-Am hurdler, this year's SEA Games marks her first appearance in the event. Her previous experience at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games saw her place seventh and last in the 400-meter hurdles event. With a burning desire for redemption, Hoffman is focused on winning and believes she can do just that.

I am excited to compete here, Hoffman exclaimed. My goal is to win, and I am confident that I can. I am so happy to see my other teammates here, my fellow Filipinos. With the women's 110-meter hurdles qualifiers set at 430 p.m. and finals at 615 p.m., Hoffman will be looking to make a statement in her first SEA Games event.

Tolentino Eyes Improvement

Meanwhile, Cabang Tolentino is gearing up for his men's 110-m hurdles event, scheduled for 5 p.m. Having won bronze in the Cambodia games two years ago, he hopes to improve on that performance. With only one event on his plate, Tolentino is focused and ready to give it his all.

Overcoming Adversity

After a challenging year that saw her deal with Achilles pain and recover from hernia surgery, Hoffman is grateful for the opportunity to compete at the SEA Games. I will just do my best despite the situation, she assured. I am okay after my surgery, and I'm glad to see all my teammates here. I hope we can do well here.
