Globasa roars back; Dagoon dominates anew in PPS Matalam
The Comeback Kid Globasa Roars Back to Victory in PPS Matalam
The world of tennis is all about perseverance and resilience, and no one exemplifies this better than Shaun Globasa. After a disappointing performance at the previous week's PPS-PEPP Mindanao circuit, Globasa bounced back in a big way, defeating top seed and doubles partner Krelz Gecosala to claim the boys' 18-and-under title in the Mayor Oscar Valdevieso National Junior Tennis Championships.
Globasa, ranked No. 2, was determined to make up for lost time and rediscovered his peak form. He dominated Julius Otoc, 6-4, 6-3, in the quarterfinals, edged Aljaven Lumambas, 7-6(1), 6-1, in the semifinals, and then halted Gecosala's title run in a thrilling clash between two rising Cotabato stars in the premier Group 2 division.
Gecosala, meanwhile, continued to dominate the age group, claiming the 16-and-under title with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Otoc. However, his bid for a double crown was foiled by Globasa's impressive comeback.
Jan Cadee Dagoon The Queen of the Court
As Globasa was making his comeback, Jan Cadee Dagoon was busy solidifying her position as a force to be reckoned with in the tennis circuit. The Olongapo City ace repeated as the girls' champion, fashioning another two-title sweep to add to her impressive collection.
Dagoon first outplayed Justine Gumbao of Sultan Kudarat, 6-1, 6-1, in the 16-and-under finals, and then dominated Kirsten Gorre, 7-5, 6-1, to claim the 18-and-under championship. With her third straight double-title sweep, Dagoon positioned herself for a possible sweep of the five Mindanao legs.
Other Winners
In other results, Mlang's Kresthan Belacas repeated as the boys' 14-and-under champion, defeating Joaquin Dacyon, 6-3, 6-2. Gumbao claimed the girls' 14-and-under crown, beating Chandra Felecio, 7-5, 6-2.
Yuan Torrente of Olongapo reasserted his dominance in the boys' 12-and-under division, blanking Dacyon, 6-0, 6-0. Jaynelle Castro of Olongapo stunned No. 2 Aleushia Maurin, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, in the semifinals before crushing Len Falconitin, 6-1, 6-0, to clinch the girls' 12-and-under plum.
Doubles Champions
In the doubles competitions, Dagoon teamed up with Castro to overpower Kathryina Makabangkit and Mariam Mokalam, 8-3, to secure the 18-and-under doubles crown. Globasa and Gecosala, meanwhile, joined forces to capture the boys' doubles trophy with an 8-4 triumph over Kenneth Ediza and Carl Eduarte.
Gumbao and Castro ruled the girls' 14-and-under doubles with an 8-2 rout of Felecio and Makabangkit, while Belacas and AJ Rabino edged Torrente and Dacyon, 8-7(7), in a thriller to clinch the boys' 14-and-under diadem.
