In a bid to make sustainable action more accessible, SM Prime Holdings Inc. (SM Prime) has launched its Green Recycling Machines (GR Machines) nationwide. This initiative is part of the company's ongoing efforts under the SM Green Movement to promote environmental sustainability.

The GR Machines are an extension of our commitment to reducing waste and promoting recycling, said Steven Tan, President of SM Supermalls. By providing a convenient and rewarding way for customers to recycle their PET bottles, we hope to inspire a culture of sustainability within our communities.

Each GR Machine is designed to be user-friendly, allowing anyone to feed in empty PET bottles up to two liters. The machines can collectively hold up to 5,000 bottles per collection cycle, which are then compressed and transformed into reusable items such as food trays.

The Importance of Recycling

The Philippines contributes significantly to ocean plastic pollution, with an estimated 300 million metric tons of plastic waste entering the sea annually. Recognizing that sustainability requires collective effort, SM has leveraged its nationwide presence to engage customers and communities in maximizing recycling efforts.

SM's Commitment to Sustainability

Through SM Cares, the company's corporate social responsibility arm, SM empowers communities to adopt sustainable practices through accessible programs such as the Trash to Cash recycling market. Since 2007, this initiative has promoted waste segregation and encouraged customers to recycle metals, papers, and plastics in exchange for cash.

New Mobile Recycling Technology

SM's GR Machines are a natural progression of these efforts, offering customers an easy three-step process to recycle their PET bottles

1. Feed any PET bottle up to two liters into the machine.
2. Confirm your deposit by pressing the prompt on the screen.
3. Await your reward.

Our goal is to enrich the circular economy through seamless waste management efforts, said Tan. We believe that with the addition of our GR Machines, we can continue to make a positive impact on the environment and inspire others to do the same.
