Europe Calls For US Reset At Security Talks
European Union leaders called on Friday (Dec. 14) for a new beginning in trans-Atlantic relations with the United States as they gathered to discuss security, energy, and economic challenges in their first-ever summit.
The EU's 27 members are concerned that U.S. President Donald Trump's administration has been too fixated on domestic problems while neglecting international affairs at a time of uncertainty in Europe, especially due to Russia's role in Ukraine and turmoil in the Middle East.
We need new ways of working together, said European Council president Donald Tusk, who called for a new beginning and urged Trump to come to Europe soon. It is important that President Trump comes to Europe as soon as possible because I think it's not only our interest but also his own political interest.
Trump has shown no signs yet of such a trip, though Secretary of State Rex Tillerson visited Brussels in early December.
The 28 leaders are discussing security issues including NATO, the fight against terrorism, energy security, cyber security, and how to respond to Russia's role in Ukraine. They're also addressing economic challenges related to tax reform and globalization.
They will focus on three key points — strengthening NATO, facing up to global threats like terrorism and cyberattacks, and deepening trade ties with the United States, British Prime Minister Theresa May said Friday at a news conference. She called that a priority.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has stressed it's time for Europe and America to take stock of their successes together as well as what needs to change.
European leaders hope that Trump will live up to his pledge during the U.S. presidential campaign to boost military spending, which they see as critical in maintaining NATO's role in European security.
But Trump's commitment to the alliance remains unclear. The EU is concerned about America's future role in Europe as it has been for some time.
