The Future of Elusive Dec sun leaves Stockholm in the dark
Sweden’s capital city, Stockholm, recorded just a half-hour of sunlight in the first half of December. This puts it on track for the darkest December since 1934 if this trend continues, according to meteorologists.
The Nordic countries are used to long, dark winters due to their northern location.
But this December has been exceptionally gloomy and overcast in Stockholm. In fact, there has only been a half-hour of sunlight so far.
Viktor Bergman at the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) said that they’ve had unstable low-pressure systems with mild and humid weather. This brings lots of clouds. There hasn’t been a chance for the skies to clear.
In addition, the sun has also been weak. Its rays have not been able to clear away the clouds either.
The average amount of sunlight in Stockholm for the full month of December is around 33 hours, according to data compiled from 1991 to 2020. However, there’s been only a half-hour so far.
Bergman said that the sun could make an appearance in Stockholm soon but it’s uncertain.
