EDSA lane closures set for MRT 7 girders

Title MRT 7 Girder Installations Nighttime Lane Closures on EDSA Starting February 1
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has announced that nighttime lane closures will commence on February 1, affecting commuters traveling along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) near North and West Avenues. These closures are essential to facilitate the installation of steel girders for the MRT 7 project.
What's Happening
From February 1 to May 19, EDSA will be closed during nighttime hours (10 p.m. to 4 a.m.) from Landmark-Trinoma to the Unified Grand Central Station site. Additionally, there will be partial lane closures along EDSA-North Avenue, with northbound lanes affected from February 1 to May 8 and southbound lanes affected from February 15 to May 18.
Why the Closures
The MRT 7 project requires the installation of tower support systems and massive steel components that connect to the North EDSA turnback track. VPS Steel Structure Corporation, the contractor for the project, will be working on these structures during the nighttime closures.
Traffic Management
To minimize disruptions, the MMDA is collaborating with the Quezon City government and the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to manage traffic along affected corridors. Traffic enforcers and contractor marshals will be stationed along key points, while signage and zipper lanes will guide motorists safely through detours.
Schedule
Here's a breakdown of the planned closures
Nighttime closures (10 p.m.-4 a.m.)
+ February 1 to May 19 - North EDSA, from Landmark-Trinoma to the Unified Grand Central Station site
+ March 24 to April 29 - West Avenue / EDSA
24/7 partial lane closures for tower supports
+ February 1 to May 8 - EDSA-North Avenue, northbound, two lanes closed
+ February 15 to May 18 - EDSA-North Avenue, southbound, two lanes closed
Tips for Commuters
For commuters heading to Balintawak from Cubao or southbound to Cubao from Balintawak, we recommend following alternate routes via Quezon Avenue, Mindanao Avenue, Congressional Avenue, FPJ Avenue, and Timog Avenue. For West Avenue-bound vehicles from Balintawak, designated detours will be available to ease congestion.
When Will it be Over?
The MRT 7 contractor will restore lanes and dismantle temporary structures at their own expense after each construction phase. Northbound EDSA lanes are set to reopen on May 8, while southbound lanes will reopen on May 18.
Project Progress
As of December 2025, the MRT 7 project is 82% complete, with partial commercial operations along the Quezon City segment targeted for the first half of 2027. The ongoing girder launches mark one of the most visible and complex phases of the project, requiring precise coordination of heavy equipment, tower supports, and traffic management.
Conclusion
While commuters can expect slowdowns despite mitigation measures, particularly during full nighttime shutdowns, with careful planning and flexible schedules, we can navigate these disruptions and look forward to a more efficient transportation system in the future.
