In 1956, Buenaventura began his journey with Shell Philippines, rising through the ranks to become the company's first Filipino chairman and CEO from 1975 to 1990. His impressive tenure was marked by wisdom, wit, and exceptional leadership skills that earned him the respect of his peers and the admiration of those who worked with him.

During his time at Shell, Buenaventura demonstrated outstanding leadership abilities, serving as a member of the Monetary Board during President Ferdinand Marcos Sr.'s term and as a board member of the Makati Business Club from 1981 to 2008.

Buenaventura's impact extended beyond Shell Philippines, as he served on the boards of various notable companies, including Concepcion Industrial Corp., DMCI Holdings Inc., International Container Terminal Services Inc., PetroEnergy Resources Corp., and Manila Water Co. Inc.

Throughout his remarkable career, Buenaventura was recognized for his outstanding contributions. He received the Honorary Officer of the Order of the British Empire from Queen Elizabeth II in 1991, a testament to his esteemed reputation.
