Title Federation of Philippine Industries Demands Accountability and Transparency in Public Works Scandal
The recent revelations of corruption in public works projects have sent shockwaves through the industry, prompting the Federation of Philippine Industries (FPI) to express deep dismay and demand accountability. In a statement issued on Friday, FPI emphasized that the allegations of undocumented projects, identical contract amounts, and substandard materials are not only signs of corruption but also pose significant threats to public safety, industry operations, and national resilience.
A Threat to Public Safety and National Resilience
According to FPI Chairman Beth Lee, Never underestimate the value of integrity in everything we do – especially in infrastructure. When flood control is compromised by corruption, it's not just concrete that cracks, it's public trust, industry stability, and the safety of our communities. The FPI strongly believes that the integrity of public works projects is crucial to ensuring the well-being of citizens and the country as a whole.
A Call for Investigative Action
The FPI has called on the government to conduct thorough investigations into all anomalous projects and hold both public officials and contractors accountable for their actions. The organization also urges mandatory monitoring and enforcement, including independent inspections, audits, and performance checks, with sanctions and blacklisting for noncompliant contractors.
Enhancing Transparency and Accountability
To prevent substandard products from entering projects, the FPI recommends random checks and strict enforcement to ensure that all construction materials meet Philippine National Standards (PNS) specifications. The organization also commends the creation of the Sumbong sa Pangulo website, which allows citizens to directly report suspicious or irregular public works projects to the Office of the President.
Addressing PCAB Accreditation Concerns
Meanwhile, Senator Panfilo Lacson has expressed concerns over reports of an accreditation for sale scheme in the operations of the Philippine Construction Accreditation Board (PCAB). Lacson wants PCAB officials to explain how certain contractors were able to secure accreditation after paying a fee. He also sounded the alarm on Wednesday after receiving information from private contractors themselves.
FPI's Commitment to Transparency
FPI Chairman Emeritus Jesus Lim Arranza emphasized that these stories strike at the heart of FPI's mission promoting a transparent, rules-based system where public funds and government authority are used to uplift, not exploit, the Filipino people. We are deeply disheartened by the flurry of corruption reports that have dominated the news in recent weeks – allegations involving lawmakers, the Department of Public Works and Highways, and other government officials.
