Tropical Storm Basyang has intensified, prompting the issuance of Signal No. 2 in at least seven areas in Mindanao, with several Visayas provinces also under storm signals. In this blog post, we will examine the forecast track and impact of this powerful storm.

Mindanao Under Threat

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has issued Signal No. 2 warnings for the following areas

Surigao del Norte, specifically Siargao-Bucas Grande Islands
Surigao del Sur, extreme northern portion of Davao Oriental
Agusan del Norte
Agusan del Sur
Misamis Oriental, northern portion of Bukidnon
Camiguin

These areas are expected to experience strong winds and heavy rainfall as the storm moves west-southwestward at 15 kilometers per hour (kph).

Forecast Track

According to Pagasa Administrator Nathaniel Servando, Basyang is likely to make its initial landfall over Surigao del Sur between tonight and early Friday morning. After crossing Mindanao, it will emerge over Bohol Sea on Friday morning, pass close to Siquijor, and may make another landfall over the southern portion of Negros Oriental by Friday afternoon.

Impact

As Basyang intensifies before its initial landfall, it is expected to bring strong winds and heavy rainfall to affected areas. The storm will then slightly weaken as it interacts with the landmass, but it will likely remain a tropical storm.

In contrast, Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon are expected to experience partly cloudy to overcast skies with isolated light rains due to the northeast monsoon, locally known as amihan.
