The usually shy animals come into increasing contact with humans due to expanding settlements and forest disturbance like mining operations for coal, iron ore, and bauxite.

These alerts are broadcast on loudspeakers in villages as a second line of defense to protect humans from elephant attacks. Forest officials also try to improve the habitat so that elephants do not raid villages in search of food.
