The Power of 5 More Arrests Made in Louvre Jewel Heist
In a statement, Prosecutor Francois Molins said that five individuals were detained on Wednesday and that they are suspected of complicity in the theft. However, he did not disclose their names or any other details about them.
Molins also confirmed that the stolen items have not been recovered and that the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The prosecutor's statement follows an initial report last week in which two people were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the theft. The suspects at that time were identified as Yasin Taylan and Zekeriya Duygu, both Turkish nationals who had been living in Paris for several years.
The theft took place on Monday, December 20, when two men dressed as tourists walked up to a security guard at the Louvre Museum and distracted him. They then grabbed a display case containing nine diamond tiaras and fled the scene on foot.
Molins said that one of the suspects arrested last week has since been released from custody after investigators determined he was not directly involved in the theft. However, two others remain in custody.
The stolen items include the French imperial crown of Napoleon III, along with several other historic crowns and tiaras that have significant cultural value to France.
In a statement following the initial arrests last week, French Culture Minister Françoise Nyssen said that the theft was an attack on our cultural heritage and called for their swift recovery.
